Information about Tigers

The Tiger, (Panthera tigris), the largest member of the cat family, rivaled only by the lion (Panthera leo) in strength and ferocity; it is a famous apex predator (meaning without a natural predator or enemy). Tigers are carnivores, primarily hunting large deer and wild boar. However, they are currently classified as Endangered, facing severe threats from habitat fragmentation, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching. Tiger habitats can stretch from the Russian Far East through parts of North Korea, China, India, and Southeast Asia to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The Siberian , or Amur tiger is the largest, measuring up to 4 meters (13 feet) in total length and weighing up to 300 kg (660 pounds). Tigers from the north are normally much bigger than those from the south, hense why the Siberian/Amur tiger is the largest among them.

Most tigers have a natural camouflage, featuring a striking combination of a reddish-orange jacket, with jet-black stripes all across it, and crisp white underlayering. However sometimes tigers can have rare traits that make them have slight changes in their colouring. Tigers are solitary, ambush predators that live and hunt completely alone, throughout their adulthood. When they are cubs they will spend most of their time together with the family until they get older and are ready to hunt for themselves.

While standard tigers feature classic orange coats, rare genetic mutations can completely transform their appearance, turning them white or even mostly black. A white tiger is caused by a genetic trait called leucism, which strips away the orange and red pigments from the fur but leaves the dark stripes intact. On the flip side, a black tiger is caused by pseudo-melanism, a mutation that makes the dark stripes grow so thick and wide that they fuse together, almost completely covering up the orange underneath. On incredibly rare occasions, a tiger can inherit both traits at the exact same time, resulting in a striking, high-contrast black-and-white coat.

They rely on environments with thick, dense cover—like tall golden grasslands, thick bushy jungles, tropical rainforests, and dense swamps. Some tigers like the Siberian/Amur tiger have adapted to living in the cold snow, with a thicker coat. These habitats are crucial because tigers do not hunt in packs like wolves or lions, they hide in the vegetation to stalk and surprise their prey one-on-one, almost like a housecat would. Tigers are very territorial, even pushing other tigers out of their area using scent marks.
